Rats Control and Removal Services in Leeds, York and Selby
The rat most commonly seen in England is the Common rat, also known as the Norway rat or the Sewer rat They have brown fur and can weigh anywhere from 150g to 550g, though rats of larger size and weight than this have definitely been seen and recorded. Fully-grown rats are about 440mm in length, with 150mm to 200mm of that number consisting of their long tails.
Rats can have between three and six litters in the space of a year. Because rats can breed all year round instead of in a specific season, they can rapidly increase their population in a given area. Rats become mature at three months old and can live for as long as 18 months, which is more than enough time to produce hundreds of young.
Rats are not very picky about where they live as long as they have access to fresh water to drink. They can often be found in the following places:
- Under patios and decking
- Under sheds
- Sewers
- Cellars
- Loft spaces
- Between walls
- Old buildings
- Old stables
Once they have established themselves, rats can quickly take over an area. They will chew through boxes, cables and wires as they rapidly reproduce.
Common signs of a rat infestation include:
- Food in the cupboards being chewed or torn
- Droppings in a cigar shape that are usually 5mm in length
- Hearing scratching noises within your walls
- Paw prints and tail marks in dusty areas
- Smear marks left by rats repeatedly moving over an object
- Chewing marks on the pipe lagging in your loft
If you think you definitely have a rat problem on your hands, then you need to handle it as soon as possible. Left untreated, rats can quickly reproduce and cause lasting damage to your property.
